About Marley

Marley Shropshire is a director, producer, and writer whose career spans musical theatre, new-work development, and artistic leadership. With more than a decade of professional experience, her work is rooted in a passion for storytelling and a belief in theatre’s ability to illuminate both our differences and our shared humanity.

Marley began her professional theatre career in London after completing her graduate studies at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her early work included associate directing at the Rose Playhouse before her career took her to Houston, where she became part of the artistic team at Theatre Under the Stars.

A longtime champion of new work, Marley has directed world and regional premieres alongside reimagined productions of established musicals. Her directing credits include the world premieres of The Woman in the Mirror, For Tonight, Breaking Out of Sunset Place, and The Sweet Potato Queens, where she worked with writers Rupert Holmes, Melissa Manchester, and Sharon Vaughn in bringing the new musical to the stage; the regional premiere of Unlock’d; and productions including Side Show, Violet, Heathers, First Date, Striking 12, Bonnie & Clyde, Elf the Musical, and Footloose.

Marley's artistic leadership career includes serving as Associate Artistic Director at Theatre Under the Stars, Director of Artistic Production at HITS Theatre, and Producing Executive Director of Queensbury Theatre. At Theatre Under the Stars, she helped develop TUTS Underground, an initiative focused on contemporary musical theatre, new work, and expanding the range of work presented by the organization. She later brought that commitment to Queensbury Theatre, where her artistic programming emphasized new musicals, premieres, and the development of emerging work.

As a writer, Marley co-wrote the play The Woman in the Mirror with Dayna Steele and produced and directed its world premiere in Houston in 2021. She wrote the book for the musical Lady of Agreda, which received its world premiere in Houston in 2020, and her additional writing credits span bookwriting, lyrics, screenwriting, and original material for the stage.

Marley's productions have received recognition from the Houston Press Theatre Awards. First Date received Best Musical honors, with Marley named a Best Director finalist; Striking 12 received Best Musical and Best Director nominations and won for Best Lighting; and Heathers received Best Musical and Best Choreography nominations. Her directing work and artistic leadership have been covered by the Houston Chronicle, Houston Press, and Houstonia.

Marley holds an MA in Theatre Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, and a BFA in Theatre Performance from Baylor University.

Marley lives in Philadelphia with her husband, broadcaster Fred Shropshire, their four children, and their Cavapoo, Rosemary.
